Subject: Staff Orientation redesigned
To: ADP and SSDP alumni
Hi! I wanted all of you to know about the various changes in the new
Staff Orientation. Please check out the new web based training site for
both new and returning staff. There might also be information in the
site that you could use, or need to direct others to. A big thank you
to all of you who helped test the web site!

Staff Orientation Program Redesigned
The full day Staff Orientation program has recently been assessed and a
new program and web site has been implemented as a result. After
careful assessment of the program, responses from attendees indicated
that they felt there was too much information to absorb in the standard
day-long classroom format. They felt that some of the information was
already known or was not needed right away, but would be used at some
point in the future. Additionally, 45% of the "new" staff had
previously worked at or had attended Stanford as a student, and many
had already worked in their new job for several weeks before they
attended the Orientation.
The solution to the problem was two-fold, with the aim being to give
the new staff member what they need to know, when they need it, and at
their desktop, if desired. Providing a web-based training site and
shortening the current program will more closely meet the needs of both
new and returning staff and meet departmental needs to orient the new
staff member to his or her new job quickly.
Web-based Training Site
The new Staff Orientation web site is located at
http://www-leland.stanford.edu/dept/ps/orientation/
Included in this site are a multitude of resources, information,
printable references, video clips and easy navigation tools in these
areas:
* About Stanford: mission, organization, and history
* Transportation: parking permits, Clean Air Credits and the
Marguerite shuttle
* Health and Safety: Illness and Injury Prevention, emergency
preparedness, and a checklist to review with supervisors
* Professional Development: courses at Stanford and the Staff Training
Assistance Program (STAP)
* Policies and Resources: Staff Handbook and a list of Staff Affairs
Officers
* Your next steps: how to get an ID card, New Employee Checklist, and
online registration for the in-class session on Health and Retirement
Benefits
1/2 Day Program
On May 5th, the current full day format will be replaced by a half day
format to be held Mondays, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The new format will
include resources and handouts outlining the above items as well as a
full orientation to health and retirement choices.
Sign up is still required to attend the in-class session of Staff
Orientation by calling Training and Organizational Development at
3-0657 or registering online.
