[there are also man pages on pedit and lookup on xenon and csl.] Date: Mon, 14 Apr 97 11:29:28 PDT From: Charles Bunch Subject: pedit notes csl> pedit bunch ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PEDIT2 -- Personal-information Editor -- Charles P. Bunch (M 6092) Use TAB, arrow keys, etc. to choose one of the following and then hit RETURN: Choose person in DB. Add new person to the DB. Retire person from DB. Edit name, birthday, title, note, and/or department. Edit relation information (division, faculty/staff/student, jobs, etc.). Edit email information (email address, csaliases, etc.). Edit www information (homepage). Edit primary peditclient. Edit secretary and/or sponsor. Edit Stanford office. Edit phone numbers. Edit mail addresses (not email). Exit from the PEDIT program. Go to HELP menu. Hit RETURN to edit secretary or sponsor. Otherwise hit TAB. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edit relation information (division, faculty/staff/student, jobs, etc.) -- Determines which mailing lists people are on, their listing in the kiosk and other department directory info, other computer-related benefits (like computer account eligibility). All CSD staff, faculty, and lecturers should have ONE division relation, and one (or maybe two) position relations. Edit email information (email address, csaliases, etc.) -- Determines where your mail from the mailing lists generated from the relation fields will be delivered. Can take up to 1.5 hours before activated. (Be careful not to create mail loops when changing where you read mail.) Edit primary peditclient -- This information is used to enable the specified computer account to edit information in PEDIT. An account can also be enabled based upon the email address for the person. If people have email forwarded to a computer without pedit installed, enter here their accounts on a computer with pedit to allow them to update their pedit entries themselves. Edit Stanford office -- This information is used to generate gates@cs and addresses for each wing and is important for knowing who our Gates residents are. Retire person from DB -- When a person leaves the deptartment, choose this option. It will delete Gates offices listing, on campus phone number, relation fields, and add "former" in front of their title. Important for keeping the database up-to-date. ************************************************************************ From hector@Coke.Stanford.EDU Wed Mar 13 13:40:15 1996 To: csl-everyone@shasta.Stanford.EDU Subject: the Gates people database As some of you know, there is a database system (called pedit) run by the CSD Computer Facilities people that keeps track of all people with offices in Gates. This database is used, for example, by the kiosk in the first floor lobby to find out who is where. It is also used to manage various mailing lists for Gates. It is important that everybody in CSL have an entry in this database, so you can be found! :-) It is also important to keep it up to date. Here is how to go about it: (1) If you do not have an entry (check the kiosk to see if you find your entry), then you have to contact one of the following people who are authorized to create new records: Schwappach Eileen Siroker Marianne Lambeth Sharon Beizer Sarah Betters Lilian Gere Susan Gerlach Suvan Hadding Darlene Munda Siegrid Rowland Margaret Schulman Naomi Ingram Elizabeth (2) If you do have an entry, then you can update it yourself. However, this can only be done from the following machines, so you need an account there: shasta mojave anna arith snooze If you do not have an account on any of these machines (or on sunburn for CSD people), then please see one of the above people to update your record. We are working on imporving the system, but this is how it works for now. I'll keep you posted... hector ************************************************************************ From: gere Mar 12 1996 Folks: I think there are a few features we didn't know about that will make using the department database a bit more effective. The bad news is, it involves changing fields not accessible to the students. First, lookup returns "no current person with that last name" if there is no relation field (such as Systems or EE-Active) for the person. It then goes into a longer archival search. The distinction between Systems and CSL is unclear; it appears to be redundant. However, CSL-staff/-students, etc. mail lists *will* in the future be derived from this field, so please use it. Second, student status will show as "Unknown" unless the EE-active relation was filled in (on the second screen, when adding). This is used in CSD to determine actual status, such as MS or PhD. For EE it only shows as Student for some reason, but that may change when Action examines the process. Third, redundant addresses will create multiple entries in the kiosk and on mailing lists. (Do you really still have an office in CIS?) ************************************************************************
